SURFACE RESET: WHAT IS IT & HOW TO DO IT IN YOUR HOME

|

A surface reset is just as the words suggest! You're resetting surfaces – specifically the ones in your own home.

What Exactly Is It?

Homes are full of countertops, shelves, floors, and tables. All the surfaces throughout your space collect quite a bit of stuff as time goes by. We pick things up, put them down, shuffle them around, and next thing you know, the surfaces around your home are covered with anything and everything. This fun little technique offers an opportunity to refresh your place in a way you’ve never done before. Keep reading to see exactly how to do it.

1. Remove Everything

Going room by room and surface by surface, you’ll start by taking every single item off of each surface. For example, if you’re starting in the kitchen, take everything off your countertops or dining table and set them aside – do this for the coffee table, the bedside tables, the bathroom countertops. You get the idea! An easy way to do a thorough surface reset is to do every surface all in one swoop.

2. Clean Up

Start by removing any dust or debris. Be sure to also wipe down the items you’ve taken off those surfaces, too. Using an appropriate cleaner (wood polish, granite stone cleaner, glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, etc.), thoroughly freshen up your surfaces.

3. Like With Like

Put all the items you’ve removed in their proper places. The book you just finished reading, which was collecting dust on your dining table, now needs to be put back on the bookshelf. Same goes for any other belongings. Now is the opportunity to really get organized.

4. Keep Surfaces Simple

As a general rule, keep surfaces clean and clutter-free. Put away any less-used items in drawers, cabinets, or storage areas. For coffee or side tables, aim for a maximum of three to five items on each surface. For bookshelves, try organizing and styling your shelves like this for an aesthetically pleasing display. And in the kitchen, limit your counters to kitchen-only items, for an effortlessly clean space.
