Who doesn’t like dessert?! Humans and sweets have had a long history together – confectionery even dates as far back as 2000 B.C. In general, we love anything and everything sugary. To celebrate National Dessert Day on Oct. 14, here are three tasty treats to whip up.
Cinnamon Tortilla Crisps
For this light and crispy dessert, you’ll need a fresh pack of taco-size flour tortillas, ½ cup of coconut oil, 1 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Over medium heat, warm the coconut oil in a large pan on the stovetop. Cut the flour tortillas like a pizza until you have six to eight triangles. Repeat this process until you’ve prepped about eight tortillas. In a large bowl mix together the sugar and cinnamon and set aside. Carefully drop a single layer of tortilla triangles (do not put too many in at once) into the oil and cook on each side for about a minute, or until golden in color. Immediately pull the tortillas out and drop right into the sugar mixture, toss a few times until coated, and move the pieces aside. Repeat this process until you’ve made as many tortilla crisps as you’d like and serve immediately. Store in an airtight container for up to a week in the pantry.
Mahalabia (Muhallebi)
Creamy, silky, and sweet, this milk pudding recipe will send you to dessert heaven. You’ll mix cornstarch, milk, whipping cream, and sugar together to form a paste by simmering over the stove to thicken. Add orange blossom, rose, or cardamom flavoring, and pour into glasses to cool in the fridge before garnishing with pistachios or other goodies – here is the full recipe.
Chilled Caramel Slice
Caramel bars, but make it cold! This tasty sweet is ready to pop into the fridge or freezer in just an hour. Take a bite of one of these bars and get a little bit of shortbread, a hint of chocolate, and a whole lot of chewy caramel.
