Woman thinking about what she is thankful for at her dining room table

We love our residents here at The Ranch at Shadow Lake. That’s why Nov. 24 is all about you! Stop by the office starting at noon for the Ranch’s Thankful for Our Residents event. Grab a goodie bag and tell us what you are thankful for.

This event is a good reminder to incorporate gratitude into your daily life. It’s good for your health and happiness! Looking for ways to get started? Here are five ways to practice gratitude this holiday season.

Practice Mindfulness

We hear a lot about mindfulness in this high-stress age. This practice puts all your awareness on the present moment – not on yesterday’s rough day at work or that hefty to-do list you have yet to dig into. This helps enrich experiences and deepen your appreciation of everyday moments. Here’s a guide to help get started.

Focus on the Positive

When life gets hectic or stressful, it’s easy to dwell on the negative. Instead, do your best to stop, take a deep breath, and train your focus on the good things – everyday things. That might be a beautiful sunset, a kind gesture from a friend or co-worker, or a wonderfully brewed cup of coffee. It’s a small step that can have a big impact on your health.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

Putting life’s positive moments to paper goes a long way in helping you fully appreciate them. Take a few minutes every day to jot down a few things for which you are thankful. You’ll be surprised how easy it is. Check out this site for ideas on how to start yours.

Call or Text a Friend

Fallen out of touch with a close friend? Call them! Let them know how much you miss and appreciate them. It’ll do wonders for you – and them.

Volunteer Your Time

Choose a cause that resonates with you and donate your time. Helping those in need benefits not only the greater good, but it provides some perspective and helps you appreciate all that you have.

Some ideas:

  • Help out at a local food pantry
  • Volunteer at an animal shelter
  • Donate money to a good cause
