Looking for ways to give back to the community and have fun while doing it? Here are four upcoming volunteer opportunities in and around Houston this month.
Candlelighters Fun Walk
Support Candlelighters, an organization that “serves children with cancer and their families receiving treatment in the Texas Medical Center,” by volunteering for its annual Fun Walk at Terry Hershey Park on Sept. 11. There are a number of ways to help out. Even simply participating in the Fun Walk goes a long way in helping fight childhood cancer – it’s also a great chance to get your steps in for the day!
Help Fight Human Trafficking
Join the fight against human trafficking by working the phone bank for this West End Church and Rescue Houston-backed volunteer session from 6:30-8:30 PM on Sept. 13. The church’s campus on Shepherd Drive in Houston is hosting.
Volunteer at Moody Gardens
Love animals and nature? Of course you do. If you have diving skills, consider volunteering at the Moody Gardens aquarium. It’s a fun way to help out this nonprofit organization dedicated to “providing an education destination utilizing nature in the advancement of rehabilitation, conservation, recreation, and research.” Moody is hosting a volunteer meeting at 6:30 PM on Sept. 15 at Gigglin’ Marlins Dive & Swim. A volunteer representative will be on hand to field questions on all the ways you can chip in.
Celebrate National Public Lands Day by helping clean up Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center at the Creek Bash on Sept. 25. Volunteers will remove trash along the park’s waterways to keep this outdoor destination in Humble in top shape. The action begins at 7 AM.
