Whiskey in aging barrels at a distillery near The Ranch at Shadow Lake in Houston, Texas

If you're searching for a fine whiskey, Houston's many distilleries and whiskey bars are the places to visit. Artisan whiskey makers serve a variety of wonderful amber liquids for you to enjoy. Whether you prefer bourbon, rye, or more exotic libations, you'll find something to delight your taste buds in Houston.

Here are a few local spots with great whiskey:

When it comes to whiskey tasting, there's nothing like learning about the distillery's unique creation process. Yellow Rose Distillery, launched in 2012, claims it is Houston's first legal whiskey distillery. Here, you can taste Yellow Rose's Outlaw Bourbon, which the American Distilling Institute awarded as Best In Class. Their Straight Rye Whiskey won a Double Gold award presented by the San Francisco Artisan Spirits.

Yellow Rose is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

Located inside downtown's Houston Cotton Exchange Building, Public Services Wine & Whisky is a landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They specialize in libations from all over the world, including many hard-to-find spirits. Their full-service bar serves a wide variety of whiskeys and other liquid delights. Their service emphasizes attention to detail without being pretentious. Snacks are "curated" by Theodore Rex.

Hours for Public Services are from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Street parking is free after 6 p.m. and all day Sundays.

Whitmeyer's Distilling Co. bills itself as Harris County's First Distillery. "Pride, passion and enthusiasm" guide these intrepid distillers as they turn out small batches of their liquid refreshments. Their aim is to provide customers with a delicious, top-notch beverage. You might try their Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey, their Texas Peach Whiskey, or their Texas Straight Bourbon Barrel Selection Series.

Hours are from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. There's no need to make a reservation — walk-ins are welcome.
