Feb. 9 is National Pizza Day, so what better excuse could there be to enjoy a slice or an entire pie from one of these tasty Dallas pizzerias? Whether you’ve got strong feelings about New York-style vs Chicago deep-dish style, or you want to try some creative modern topping combos, there’s something to suit every preference among our favorite pizza joints.
This brick-walled counter service pizza joint in trendy Deep Ellum (2807 Elm St.) is a local favorite, serving New York-style thin-crust pizzas. Go for a whole pie or their signature Huge Slice. They have all the usual toppings and you can always build your own, but their specialty pies are well worth a try. Our picks are the Blue Buffalo with grilled chicken, buffalo sauce, blue cheese, and mozzarella, and The White with roasted garlic alfredo, fresh garlic and basil, oregano, truffle oil, and ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses.
Carmine’s Pizza Downtown
Another popular pizza place in the heart of downtown is Carmine’s Pizzeria, on the corner of Harwood and San Jacinto (2006 San Jacinto St., #100). Their New York-style pizzas are great if you want a classic like Margheritte, something more controversial like Hawaiian (prompting yet another argument about whether pineapple belongs on pizza), or a designer pizza like their Famous BBQ Chicken Pizza. They also have a selection of classic pasta dishes on the menu.
Mama Mia Pizza & Pasta
At this family-owned and operated Italian restaurant in Deep Ellum (2935 Elm St.), you’ll find pizza, a wide variety of pasta dishes, and salads, plus some hearty hot subs. Build your own pizza with your go-to toppings, or mix things up a little and try a stromboli or calzone. And save some room for the Jack Daniels Banana Bread Pudding afterward. Mmmmm.
LA Gourmet Pizza
As the name suggests, LA Gourmet Pizza (2709 Mckinney Ave.) is a casual eatery serving hand-made West Coast-style pizza, plus several different types of ziti, salads, and sandwiches. The vegetarian California pizza is meatless and delish, with pesto sauce, black olives, fresh buffalo mozzarella, mozzarella, avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, organic baby spinach, and Asiago. Or how about the San Francisco pizza with tomato sauce, sliced zucchini, bell peppers, red onion, mozzarella, gorgonzola, and sausage?
