The Last Kingdom”
If “Vikings” and “Game of Thrones” had a love child, it might well be “The Last Kingdom.” Based on Bernard Cornwell’s “The Saxon Stories” novels and set in medieval England, this Netflix historical drama entwines fact and fiction with hefty doses of adventure, sex, and violence. Alexander Dreymon stars as Uhtred, a warrior who was born a Saxon noble but kidnapped as a child and raised by Danish raiders. Torn between two cultures, he must fight for his place in society while trying to reclaim his birthright. Four seasons are currently available.
“Bosch” is a crime drama based on Michael Connelly’s novels and has an atmospheric, noir-ish vibe and a great cast that has carried it through six seasons, with a seventh and final season slated for release in 2021. In this Amazon Original Series, Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) is a jaded, old-school LAPD detective who cares more about solving murders than social niceties or departmental politics. Each season follows the progress of one central case, while Bosch’s personal baggage and several overarching plot lines effectively knit the different seasons together and keep you wanting more.
A compelling new Netflix fantasy drama and coming-of-age story based on the young adult novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, “Cursed” is a tale that draws upon the legends of King Arthur. Katherine Langford stars as Nimue, a young heroine with mysterious powers who is destined to become the powerful, yet tragic, Lady of the Lake. She embarks on a journey with the young mercenary Arthur to deliver an ancient sword and save her people.
In 12 episodes across two seasons, Amazon’s “Fleabag” tells the story of a self-destructive young British woman (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) trying to regain the trust of her friends and family as she navigates life in London. Based on Waller-Bridge’s one-woman play, it is by turns hilarious, raunchy, and surprising. The cast also includes standout turns from Sian Clifford, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Andrew Scott, and Kristin Scott Thomas.
