Housed comfortably within a 1920's historic bank building in Carrollton's quaint town square is a colorful quilt and fabric shop where creativity reigns and new friendships begin. The Old Craft Store has a vintage feel with its original tin ceiling, antique wooden tables, and bushel baskets filled with vibrant textiles waiting to become a masterpiece. It's an old-fashioned place with a cheery attitude and you will be glad you stopped by.
About
The Old Craft Store had its incarnation as a quilt shop about thirty years ago and now easily blends in with Carrollton's charming newer downtown cafes, salons, and stores. The homespun facade opens to surprisingly versatile and modern spaces without sacrificing the folksy vibe. A section of the store is devoted to a small operating historic post office where you can buy stamps or send packages.
Pass by the fabulous quilts lining the walls to the back of the shop and you will discover an area showcasing unique antiques like vintage tins, old signs, heirloom seed packets, and other carefully selected treasures. The shop owner, Melba Hamrick, is a talented quilt artist and is available to repair your own old quilts if you ask. You will feel like you just left grandma's house.
Classes
The Old Craft Store offers a variety of workshops and classes designed to get the creative and industrious instincts out of all skill levels. Beginners can learn the basics in the My 1st Quilt class where a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals will give you bragging rights to a completed 12-block quilt top. You can follow that with the Beyond the Basics workshop where inspiration is as close as your scissors.
Specialty project classes are featured year-round including cool themed ventures like Pineapple Play where you get to make perfect pineapple blocks or the Penguin Party for a fun and whimsical penguin quilt everyone will love. Other classes emphasize more sophisticated techniques for the serious quilter who might want to expand skills. There will be laughter, coffee, and snacks.
Events
The Old Craft Store challenges and entertains quilters and would-be quilters with a series of events throughout the year. Free demonstrations, boot sales, and the Breakfast Club are popular neighborhood gatherings. Small groups can enjoy a late evening of productive fun with the Friday night Stitch with Friends or enjoy a weekend at TJ's Quilt Camp. Kid's camps are also on the calendar.
The shop is active in the community and gives back by donating quilts and receiving blankets to charitable organizations and by sponsoring the in-store Sock Tree. Customers donate a pair of socks which are hung on a tree inside and, when full, the socks are given to Metrocrest Service Center, a local community caretaker. The Old Craft Store is a Carrollton gem.
