Everything old is new again and drive-in movies are no exception. Fueled by our nostalgia and love of all things retro, drive-ins were already making a comeback that has been boosted further by the social distancing requirements of COVID-19. There are two drive-ins within around 30 minutes’ drive of Carrollton, Texas. So dress up in your poodle skirt and letterman jacket (kidding, unless you really want to), jump in your hot rod, and let’s go!
The Drive-In Experience
Going to a drive-in for the first time is an experience in and of itself. Prior to the movie, a slow parade of cars are guided to their assigned locations in front of a large, outdoor screen. You listen to the movie’s audio via your car radio on a specified frequency, so it’s not exactly the high-tech audio experience you’ll get in a modern, indoor cinema – but, like we said, retro. You stay seated in your car or can sit in the bed of your truck or back of your SUV and watch the movie from there. The audience usually arrives anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes prior to the movie’s start time, as parking spots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. There’s something of a low-key tailgate vibe as people relax, enjoy concessions, and hang out in and around their cars before showtime.
Fun Movie Grill Drive-In Theater
Fun Movie Grill Drive-In Theater at Macarthur Marketplace in Irving is only about 10 minutes drive away from Lux on Main, making it the closest drive-in option. It currently offers one screening at 8:30 PM each evening. Drive-in tickets must be purchased online in advance, and the cost is just $20 per vehicle (plus tax). So load up the car with as many people from your household as will comfortably fit, and you’ll pay way less than for several indoor movie tickets. Concessions are available for purchase and there are restrooms onsite.
The Coyote Drive-In is a little further away – around 30 minutes’ drive to NE Fourth Street on Panther Island in Fort Worth. It also currently has one screening per evening, starting at dusk (between 8:10 and 8:30 PM). Gates open at 7 PM each night and the earlier you arrive, the better shot you have at nabbing a rock-star parking spot. Purchasing your tickets online in advance is recommended and ticket prices are $7 for adults aged 12 and up, and $4 for kids aged five to 11. Kids under four are free.
Although you may feel like you’re travelling back in time to the 1950s or ’60s when you go to a drive-in, they’re generally showing the latest Hollywood releases. Check with the venue before you arrive to see what’s playing and verify current health and safety requirements.
