For more than forty years, a world-renowned event has filled the city's skies with hundreds of colorful hot air balloons. It's called the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and the fun takes place October 6th through the 14th.
Dating back to 1979, Balloon Glows is the fiesta's most spectacular event. It's where all of the balloons fire their burners and light up at the same time, and is followed by the most impressive fireworks display in New Mexico.
Special Shape Rodeo
The first Special Shape Rodeo was so successful, it caused major traffic jams and produced large crowds. This year, there are dozens of special shapes including Uncle Sam, Smiley Scarecrow, and Van Gogh.
Featuring a launch of the participating balloons, the mass ascension is a sight not to be missed. They launch in two waves and are led by a balloon carrying the American flag while the Star Spangled Banner plays in the background.
AIBF Chainsaw Carving International
Found at the north end of Balloon Fiesta Park, the AIBF Chainsaw Carving Invitational features carvers from across the globe. Chainsaw sculpture is a fairly new art form, and the pieces will be available for purchase.
Several groups and solo artists will take to the stage including the USAF Academy Band Wild Blue Country. The band is made up of active duty musicians who support the Air Force both in the United States and abroad. They play lively tunes and have appeared on Good Morning America and other national television programs.
