A woman stirs a mug of hot chocolate.

While there may not be much snow in Phoenix, we can still enjoy the winter tradition of a rich, creamy cup of hot chocolate. But the new hot chocolate bomb trend makes this nostalgic beverage even better – and Cactus Forty-2 is here for it! Check out our handy guide to hot chocolate bombs, and learn what these deadly-sounding, but incredibly fun and tasty creations are, where to buy them, and how to make them yourself.

What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?

If you haven’t already seen one of the hot chocolate (or cocoa) bomb videos taking over the internet, it’s a hollow chocolate sphere filled with mini marshmallows, hot cocoa powder, and sometimes other goodies. Once steaming milk is poured over the bomb, it will “explode” or melt into a beautifully rich mug of hot chocolate. Just stir, sip, and enjoy.

Hot Chocolate Bomb-Making 101

To make your own hot chocolate bomb you’ll need compound chocolate candy melts in whatever colors you prefer, hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, any other flavorings you want to include (e.g. crushed peppermint candies, butterscotch chips, instant coffee powder, etc.), a thin silicon sphere mold around 2.5-inches in diameter, and a spoon or a small artist's brush to spread the chocolate in the mold.

There are five basic steps to creating your bomb:

  • Melt the chocolate
  • Coat the mold with chocolate and let it set
  • Remove half-spheres from the mold and fill one side with cocoa ingredients
  • Seal a filled and empty shell together to make a complete sphere
  • Decorate the exterior as desired

Watch How It’s Done

This quick video from A Table Full of Joy shows you how it’s done, and this more detailed tutorial from Tasty Pastry Kitchen demonstrates each step in detail and has lots of pro tips to make the process work perfectly.

Where Can I Buy One?

If you’d rather eat (or in this case, drink) candy than make it yourself, Neiman Marcus sells an adorable snowman-shaped hot chocolate bomb that makes five to eight servings. You can see if Neiman Marcus at Scottsdale Fashion Square has them in stock or order online. Costco sells packages of 12 Cocoa Bombs (if you can find them in stock), and there are now about a zillion Etsy stores that have them available in all kinds of designs and varieties.

A hot chocolate bomb may not really explode, but it will blow your mind and your taste buds. Have fun making and drinking yours. For more good eats and fun activities, take a look at the Cactus Forty-2 blog.
