WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?
Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court using paddles and a small, wiffle-like ball. This fast-paced sport combines elements of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton. The game is played to a score of eleven and must be won by two points. If necessary, play will continue past eleven points until a player wins by two. There are over 15,000 indoor/outdoor courts in the United States, and more than 2.5 million people play across the country.
WHERE TO PLAY
THOMPSON PEAK PARK
Spanning 29 acres, Thompson Peak Park features three lighted pickleball courts. They're free to use and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis between sunrise and 10:30 p.m. Mornings are typically the busiest time. Throughout the year, the park also hosts fun pickleball classes. They're for beginning and intermediate players, and the next session is in November.
Nestled in nearby Mesa, Kleinman Park features four pickleball courts. The courts were installed in 2017, and players can challenge their opponents between sunrise and 10:00 p.m. The park spans nearly 25 acres, and also offers a walking trail and lighted sand volleyball courts.
With 18 courts, it's no wonder that Pecos Park is one of the most popular places to play. The courts are relatively new, and they welcome players between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. The park also offers lessons, and advanced students enjoy round robin sessions.
