If you're looking for something to do on a hot summer day, visit one of the following specialty museums where you can spend hours exploring fascinating exhibits:
Arizona Museum of Natural History
Nestled in the heart of downtown Mesa, the Arizona Museum of Natural History is one of the state's premier cultural attractions. It began in Mesa City Hall in 1977, and today it occupies its own building where visitors can see Dinosaur Mountain, the largest dinosaur exhibit west of the Mississippi River. The museum's mission is to inspire wonder, respect, and understanding for the natural and cultural history of the Southwest, and other exhibitions include Arizona Through Time, Cultures of the Ancient Americas, and Native Peoples of the West.
Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting
It was in 1961 when George F. Getz Jr. established the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting. The museum honors those who have died in the line of duty or have been recognized for acts of heroism, as well as displays an array of fire apparatus. The impressive collection began when George's wife gifted him a 1924 American la France fire engine for Christmas in the mid-1950s. He went on to purchase more pieces including ladder wagons, steam-powered wagons, and fire sleds, all of which are on display. Visitors can explore Monday through Saturday, and admission is just ten dollars.
Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West
Situated on the former site of the Loloma Transit Station, the Western Spirit Museum is one of the most popular attractions in Scottsdale. It explores the history, art, and rich cultural heritage of the West, and has been featured in numerous publications such as Metropolis Magazine and USA Today. Ongoing exhibitions include Heritage Hall, The Abe Hays Family Spirit of the West Collection, and Courage and Crossroads: A Visual Journey Throughout the American West.
