The Dallas Zoo was the first attraction of its type in the southwest, and it started in 1888 with two deer and two mountain lions.
It moved to its current location in 1912, and today, more than two thousand animals call it home.
Visitors can explore fascinating exhibits and enjoy fun experiences, including:
Giants of the Savanna
Giants of the Savanna is the only exhibit in the country to feature elephants and other species in the same habitat. In 2015, it was named one of the top ten zoo exhibits by USA Today, and it's a favorite among guests. In addition to the elephants, animals include giraffes, warthogs, and zebras.
Simmons Hippo Outpost
At the Simmons Hippo Outpost, visitors enjoy getting an up-close look at these magnificent animals. Known as supersized "river horses," they're the third largest land mammal and can be seen from various vantage points within the exhibit.
Stop by the Cheetah Encounter to meet Winspear and his best friend, a Labrador retriever named Amani.
Wild Africa Safari Monorail
The safari is not to be missed as it meanders through habitats not accessible by foot such as the woodlands of Kenya. The train only reaches speeds of three to four miles per hour, and over the last twenty-five years, it has carried nearly four million passengers.
Wilds of Africa
The Wilds of Africa is a renowned exhibit as it's the first in the world to showcase every major habitat of an entire continent. It encompasses twenty-five-acres and features forest, bush, river, desert, woodland, and mountain environments. Many of the animals can only be seen during the safari adventure, and highlights include penguins, chimpanzees, and elephants.
