Journey Back in Time at the Farmers Branch Historical Park

Just eight minutes from Union at Carrollton Square is the Farmers Branch Historical Park, a fun destination that takes visitors on a journey back in time.

Nestled on twenty-seven acres, it preserves and interprets the history of Texas and Peters Colony, with an emphasis on Farmers Branch.

More than 100,000 people visit every year who enjoy exploring old buildings such as:

Gilbert House

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Gilbert House is architecturally referred to as a dogtrot style, which means a large open hallway runs through the middle of the home. Constructed in 1856, it consists of a chestnut plank floor, thick limestone walls, and native Texas furniture. It was the home of Dr. Samuel Gilbert and his wife, and he is known for being one of the first doctors in Dallas County as well as a founding member of the Dallas Medical Association.

Dodson House

Constructed in 1937 for William and Maude Dodson, this home was moved to higher ground five years later as the couple realized their mistake of building close to a flood-prone creek. William and four of his friends were responsible for the incorporation of Farmers Branch, and he was elected the city's first mayor. He served from 1946 to 1948, and a few of the council meetings took place at the Dodson house.

School House

According to the park, Farmers Branch holds claim to the first organized school in Dallas County. Classes began at the Methodist Church in 1846 and were taught by Thomas Williams. The schoolhouse was built around 1900, and visitors can learn more about one-room schools from this era through the educational artifacts housed inside.
