Did you know that cupcakes date back more than 200 years?
The word was first mentioned in Amelia Simmons' American Cookery in 1796.
If you would like to enjoy a delicious cupcake, head to one of the following bakeries where you'll find an array of flavors:
Nestled in Highland Village, Sprinkles is known around the world as the first cupcake bakery. It offers a quaint atmosphere and is where the bakers handcraft the treats using high-quality ingredients such as sweet cream butter and pure Madagascar bourbon vanilla. Founder Candace Nelson is a former investment banker and has been seen judging baking competitions on the Food Network. Visitors can enjoy an array of flavors that bake fresh throughout the day, and choices include lemon blueberry, cinnamon sugar, and peanut butter chocolate.
After experimenting with recipes and sharing them with family and friends, Patrice Farooq decided to open a bakery. That's how the Cupcake Kitchen was born, and after watching several programs on HGTV, she became inspired to create an atmosphere that made everyone feel at home. Patrice uses the finest ingredients, and her signature buttercream and cream cheese frosting tops most of the cupcakes. Flavors include butter pecan, glazed carrot, and banana pudding (known as one of Houston's best-kept secrets).
The bakers at Crave Cupcakes offer a gourmet twist on a nostalgic favorite. They begin each morning with sweet chocolate, seasonal fruit, and house-made pure vanilla bean extract, and make the cupcakes throughout the day to ensure freshness. The bakery has earned recognition from publications such as the Houston Press and Texas Lifestyle Magazine, and it's a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Flavors rotate daily and may include German chocolate, salted caramel, and key lime.
