Like many big cities, Houston has numerous museums for residents and visitors to enjoy including The Houston Museum of Natural Sciences, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Children's Museum of Houston. What many may not realize, however, is that there are some great offbeat museums that are worth visiting as well. For those looking to explore some out of the ordinary exhibits, here are a few great museums in Houston worth trying:
The Health Museum
Also known as The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Studies, The Health Museum is an interactive science museum focusing on health and wellbeing. Originally a part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Health Museum opened its own location in 1996. Since that time, the museum has grown to become a learning center with a mission to promote healthy lifestyles. Ongoing exhibits include the DeBakey Cell Lab and the Amazing Body Gallery.
1940 Air Terminal Museum
Located at the William P. Hobby Airport, the 1940 Air Terminal Museum makes its home in an art deco building that was once the first passenger terminal in Houston. Celebrating Houston's long history of civil aviation, the 1940 Air Terminal Museum displays numerous collections and exhibits that showcase the evolution of air travel. Special museum events occur year round including Wings and Wheels and HobbyFest.
Art Car Museum
Open since 1998, the Art Car Museum was established to celebrate the Art Car movement. A form of contemporary art, Art Cars are vehicles that have been transformed into an expression of art. A private institution, the Art Car Museum showcases regional, national, and international artists. The museum rotates their exhibits throughout the year and also offers special events such as the Houston Art Car Parade and World Art Car Day.
