Experience the Dallas Symphony Orchestra

Lovers of the fine arts should know that our community is but a ten minute walk from the stunning Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, home to the acclaimed Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the largest performing arts organization in the Southwest United States. The DSO has been fulfilling its motto, "To Entertain, Inspire, & Change Lives Through Musical Excellence," for over 100 years, with stunning performances and a diverse programming that appeals to music lovers of all kinds and ages.

The orchestra's 2018-2019 schedule has just been released. It is of special importance, as it is the tenth and final season featuring its famed Music Director, Jaap van Zweden. The full schedule can be found on the DSO website.

Classical Programs

In the upcoming season, the DSO will perform several pillars of the classical music canon. These include large-scale performances such as Mahler's epic, Das Lied von der Erde, which has not been performed by the DSO since 2001, and Rachmaninoff's The Bells (Kolokola), a 1913 secular choral work set to the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, as well as Hayden's masterpiece The Creation.

American Music & International Guests

Works by a number of American composers will be performed this season, showing off more recent developments in orchestral music on this side of the Atlantic. These performances include the DSO debut of Pulitzer Prize- and GRAMMY Award-winning composer John Adams, Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring, and Dallas-born composer Christopher Theofanidis's Rainbow Body.

Pop Culture

For those interested in attending the symphony, but looking for something more contemporary than Mahler or Rachmaninoff, the DSO also performs interesting works from popular culture through musical series and special events. This year, Pops and Pop Culture will open with Women Rock, a concert honoring notable women from rock and roll history, including Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Pat Benatar, to be followed by a Prince tribute concert. The focus of the season, however, will be a Movies In Concert series, including performances of music from The Little Mermaid, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and more.
