Art aficionados rejoice! Sundance Creek residents need not to look farther than their own backyard for a dose of culture. Midland's art scene has something for everyone, from Taos Society oil portraits at the Museum of the Southwest to a paint night with your friends full of libations and lighthearted fun. Every venue on this list is no more than a ten-minute drive away; spice things up with some art this spring!
Kelly D. Kennedy Fine Art
A mix of old and new, Kelly D. Kennedy Fine Art is a unique stop on your Midland art tour. The gallery boasts a permanent collection of over 100 works by respected artists, from Kenneth Adams' sweeping prairie vistas to Alexander Calder's stark abstractions. Visitors can also browse a wide variety of paintings by living artists, many of which are for sale (just in case something catches your eye.) Don't forget to check their events page for fun opportunities as well.
Museum of the Southwest
The Museum of the Southwest's five acres comprise an art museum, a planetarium, a children's museum, and a sculpture garden. Once you're done examining lithographs by the famous naturalist John Audubon, you might want to check out the arrowheads, included in what the museum boasts is "the largest archaeological surface collection in Texas." The Turner Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has a fascinating (but fraught) history. Visitors can also look forward to Summer Sunday Lawn Concerts featuring free live music from the community!
Support budding artists at the McCormick Gallery, which is located on the Midland College campus. Come in the spring and fall to see work from the Student Art Show. Once per year they host the Midland Arts Association Fall Juried Art Exhibition, which any Texas resident can enter—including you! Whether you work in ceramics or watercolors, here is a place for your art to shine!
Wine & Canvas
Sometimes art is best experienced by getting your hands dirty. Wine & Canvas brings the paint and pinot; you just bring yourself! Every week their calendar is updated with fun paint night events at popular restaurants around town. Friendly instructors provide you with just the right amount of guidance to create a charming painting and fond memories with friends, which you will cherish forever.
Midland is a hub of creativity and culture just waiting for you to jump right in. Art is out there!
