Learn About Southwestern Culture at the Top Museum in Midland

With such a rich history, it's no big surprise that Midland, TX boasts an interesting range of museums. One, in particular, explores the region and its history, the Museum of the Southwest. With collections that highlight everything from specific artists to the history of the area, the Museum of the Southwest will have something of interest for everyone.

Collections Worth Checking Out

For a genuine look at the people native to the Southwest, one collection that deserves attention is that of Edward S. Curtis. Famous for his black and white prints that document the way of life for Native Americans, his work is featured in other museums throughout the nation and other countries. While his work is highly praised for preserving images that reflect a culture and time in history, it also draws some criticism for portraying stereotypes that have lasted over time.

Pottery & Textiles

The pottery and textile collections are also worth checking out. These are most notably the forms of art inherent to the Southwest. The collections featured at the Museum of the Southwest span a large period of time, with some pieces from the Casas Grandes collection dating back hundreds of years. The textiles are more recent creations, woven by the Navajo primarily during the 20th century. These intricate works of art exemplify a skill that has been passed down over generations.

Archaeology & History

The archaeology and history collections are another two areas that deserve some attention as well. Midland's archaeological record is rich with artifacts that document the Spanish colonial period to frontier times, and the many changes that took place in between. For those really hoping for an in-depth look into life from an even earlier period of time, then the archaeological collection will be of interest. Thanks to a man named Bud Bissell, who collected regional artifacts throughout his life, an array of historical pieces (such as arrowheads and pottery) on display offer a glimpse into another era.
