When people think of a city or region, they can often associate a food that is famous in the area. New York City is known for its hand-tossed thin crust pizza while Boston has staked its claim on creamy clam chowder. Savannah has its own iconic foods and there are some great places to enjoy them around the city.
Here are a few favorites:
It would be hard to walk the streets of Savannah without catching the scent of freshly prepared pralines. One of the city's favorite spots to get them is at River Street Sweets. With three locations around the city, River Street Sweets is easy to find and a must for the comforting taste of homemade pralines. Though the shops are filled with many mouth-watering treats, the pralines are a customer favorite with the perfect blend of caramel and pecans.
Located just off of Chippewa Square, The Public Kitchen & Bar is a Savannah mainstay. Bright and spacious, The Public Kitchen & Bar uses modern and industrial elements to create a welcoming setting. Locally sourced ingredients highlight the menu which includes a version of the Savannah favorite, shrimp and grits. A house specialty, the Savannah Shrimp & Grits features homemade cheddar-bacon grits piled high with fresh shrimp and chorizo.
The name may focus on seafood, but for some of the best fried green tomatoes in the area, Tubby's Seafood is the place to go. With a fabulous River Street location and spectacular views, Tubby's Seafood is a popular spot to relax and enjoy their coastal fare. The Fried Green Tomatoes, however, are a must with locally grown tomatoes served with feta and a house made remoulade.
