There are bagels, and then there are great bagels. You may think you need to travel to New York City to get a great bagel, but thanks to Big Bon Bodega, that is no longer the case! This locally owned bagel shop is really shaking up the Savannah food scene, and it's totally worth a visit.
Big Bon Bodega has a very simple, minimalist interior. A bouquet of fresh flowers sits on the counter top, and you can watch the wood-fire oven at work, baking the bagels. As they are baked, the bagels are placed in a wooden chamber, which encourages their roasted aroma to waft through the shop. If you weren't hungry when you walked in, you'll be hungry as soon as you take a breath of that bagel-scented air.
Inside Big Bon Bodega, you will also find some simple merchandise like hats, pictures, and snacks. The employees are friendly, and you can watch your bagel order being prepared behind the counter.
Big Bon offers classic bagel varieties, including everything, sesame, and cinnamon raisin. You can order your bagel spread with traditional cream cheese or butter, but if you're feeling more adventurous, definitely try the kimchi cream cheese or lemon caper cream cheese. Following a vegan diet? They also offer a smooth and creamy vegan cream cheese. Bagels are sold individually and also by the half dozen and baker's dozen.
If you have a bigger appetite, try one of the bagel sandwiches. The 912 is a filling favorite stuffed with bacon, a fried egg, cheddar, and herb butter. Kids love the WB&J, which is spread with house-made walnut butter and seasonal jam.
