Seemingly endless rivers, lakes, creeks, ponds, and waterways traverse the islands that lie on the coastline of Savannah, Georgia. One of the largest of these isles is Skidaway Island, which is located just south of downtown Savannah. Explore the incredibly unique environment of southern Georgia at these three nature hot spots.
Skidaway Island State Park
This 600-acre state park is located right off the Diamond Coastway nearest to Savannah on the northern section of the island. Visitors can expect to see a variety of native wildlife including deer, fiddler crabs, raccoon, egrets, and many migratory birds over six miles of hiking trails from 7 am to 10 pm. For those looking for a night of luxury on Skidaway, there are cabins available for rent that feature screened porches, air conditioning, a bathroom with a shower, kitchens, master bedrooms, and sleeping lofts. However, the park also caters to those searching for a more natural experience at the tent and pioneer campgrounds.
University of Georgia Marine Education Center and Aquarium
Visit Georgia's first saltwater aquarium in northern Skidaway to view some of Georgia's most interesting marine animals. There are 16 exhibits of animals species mostly caught by staff on the coast of the island, as well as several educational and recreational activities. Entrance fees are minimal, however, be sure to carry some cash on you as the aquarium does not accept debit or credit cards.
Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge
Making up a large portion of Skidaway Island, the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge is a popular hunting location for deer and hogs. Visitors can traverse a wide range of terrain including coastal beach, maritime forest, and salt marsh while viewing unique wildlife such as loggerhead sea turtles, piping plovers, and the American alligator. Hunting and fishing are permitted on the premises and the specific rules for these activities can be found here.
