Nestled along the Northeast Gateway to the Great Florida Birding Trail, Jacksonville is a premier bird watching destination.
Several of the area's parks and nature centers are home to an array of species including:
Tree Hill Nature Center
Established in 1971, the Tree Hill Nature Center promotes environmental stewardship. This urban wilderness preserve stretches fifty acres across hilltop and wetland areas and includes butterfly and hummingbird gardens. Visitors can explore an array of trails such as Boardwalk and Red Bay Branch where they may see bird species such as red-shouldered hawks, red-headed woodpeckers, and northern mockingbirds.
Jennings State Forest
Comprised of more than fifteen natural biological communities, Jennings State Forest is home to rare plants including Barham's Ixia and St. John's Susan. It is open daily for recreational activities such as hiking, canoeing, and bird watching. Songbirds can be found in the uplands while wading species are located along North Fork Black Creek and other tributaries. Look for great crested flycatchers, gray catbirds, little blue herons, and hundreds more.
Big Talbot Island State Park
Nestled on one of Northern Florida's unique sea islands, Big Talbot was once the home of the state's most ancient people: the Timucua. Evidence of their civilization is found throughout the island in the form of old oyster shells. Today, the land is a popular bird watching location that draws thousands of people every year. Those who take a stroll on the beach may spot black simmers and piping plovers, and visitors exploring the marshes will likely see wood storks and egrets.
