It’s no easy feat to find apartments with washers and dryers in Dallas, but now that you have, you may be overwhelmed with the task of keeping up with your laundry. Fear not, we’re here to help with these handy hacks to make laundry day quick, efficient, and maybe even fun.
Sort Your Clothes Beforehand
One of the most time-consuming aspects of doing laundry involves tediously going through your heaping pile of clothes and sorting out the items by color. Take care of this ahead of time by sorting the clothes as you put them into the hamper. You can find inexpensive mesh hampers at your local dollar store, and we suggest purchasing four of them – one for darks, whites, brights, and dry cleaning. Line them up in your closet for easy sorting at the end of the day. This will make laundry day feel less daunting and far less time consuming. Pro tip: If you can remember, try to not put your clothing into the hamper inside out. This will save you a lot of time as you’re folding later!
Pinched for Time
We all know that feeling of having somewhere to be and desperately hoping the dryer does its job in record time. If you’re in a pinch for time and waiting for clothes to dry, try the old towel trick. Throw a dry towel into the mix for 15-20 minutes and watch your clothes miraculously lose moisture. The towel helps to absorb water from the clothes, speeding along the drying process.
DIY Dryer Sheets
All out of dryer sheets again? You can actually use a piece of balled up aluminum foil in place of a dryer sheet. The foil will reduce pesky static electricity that makes folding such a chore, and it can be reused for up to a month. Eco-friendly and wallet-friendly!
Use Hair Conditioner to Un-Shrink Clothing
This one is a favorite of ours, as it’s a devastating feeling to realize you’ve shrunk your favorite sweater or pair of pants seemingly beyond repair. Next time this happens, try out this trick. Soak the newly-miniature item in a tub of lukewarm water mixed with regular hair conditioner for about 15 minutes. Your clothing will definitely smell like conditioner and will need to be (hand!) washed again, but this tried-and-true trick may work to bring back your shrunken clothes.
Brighten up your Whites
Instead of using bleach or other harmful chemicals, try employing lemons to brighten up your dull or dingy whites. Fill a large pot of water, toss a few sliced lemons in, and bring the water to a boil. Once your lemony mixture is bubbling, toss in your clothing items and turn off the heat. Allow your clothes to soak for about an hour, and then wash them as usual. For extra whitening power, try drying them out in the sun instead of the dryer. Nature can work wonders!
