Most of us are required to spend a good deal of time indoors; we’re either working long hours in an office, studying in a classroom, or tending to home and childcare duties within the confines of four walls. Now that the weather is warming up and the buds are blossoming, it’s the perfect time to reconnect with nature and take advantage of all there is to do and see outside your front door. We’re sharing some ideas for how to best seize this sunny season and soak up the greatness of the outdoors.
Even if you live in a relatively flat part of the country, there are usually hiking or walking trails to be found within a short drive. Do a little research on local parks and trails in your area, and plan a trip to a new destination. Hiking is a wonderful way to expand your physical activity outside the walls of a gym or fitness center, and you’ll likely learn new things to appreciate about your surrounding area. Gather a group of friends, pack some trail snacks, and set off on a new adventure.
Spring is an increasingly popular time for charities to host walk, run, or bike-a-thons to support a good cause, and if you’ve never signed up for one, this could be your year. Not only do you have a fun goal to work towards, but you’ll be contributing to a worthy cause along the way. This is also a fun activity to do with a group, and whether you cajole your family members, friends, or coworkers to join you, we’re sure you won’t regret it. You may even meet some new friends along the way!
One of our favorite things about spring is the ability to buy the freshest local goods while perusing outdoors at a farmer’s market. Depending on where you are, outdoor markets are usually open on weekend mornings, and can be a great motivator to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine while browsing the impressive selections from surrounding communities. We recommend going without an agenda or shopping list and chatting up the experts at each tent to get fun ideas for new recipes with ingredients you may not be as familiar with.
As kids, many of us took for granted how big of a role being on a sports team played in our upbringing. While it gets a bit more challenging to play team sports as you get older, it’s by no means impossible. This spring, look into intramural or co-ed leagues in your area, and sign up for the sport that interests you. It’s a great way to make new friends and get back in touch with the playful, competitive side of yourself you may have left at high school graduation.
Another thing we tend to take for granted is all of the amenities at our disposal within our apartment communities. If you’ve never been to your pool, outdoor grill, or fire pit, make it a point to check out these spots this season. Sometimes the very best things are waiting just under our nose.
