Ahh, it’s that time of the year when “out with the old, in with the clean” feels just right. It’s time to take spring cleaning matters into your own hands. Dust off those surfaces and brighten those whites with these four tips to spring clean like a champ. Who knows? This may spark an amazing idea or tip for the Olympus at the District spring clean contest taking place on April 21.
Time Chunks, FTW
Breaking a task down into time chunks is proven to be significantly effective in making excellent use of your time. When it comes to spring cleaning the whole house, it can feel like a daunting task. Break it down into 30-minute chunks, either focusing on a specific area or a specific task. For example, set a timer for 30 minutes (this is key) and clean only the bathroom. Or choose to do all of one thing throughout the house with that time, like cleaning the baseboards or washing the interior windows. Allow for breaks between the time chunks, and before you know it, you’ll have a clean house. And you won’t feel like you just ran a marathon.
DIY Cleaners
When you know what is in your household cleaner, you are more likely to want to use it. Clean with less chemicals and more natural substances when you DIY your own homemade cleaning solutions. This simple recipe works well on countertops, appliances, and sinks. Mix the following ingredients well, and shake in a spray bottle.
-
¾ Cup Water
-
¾ Cup Rubbing Alcohol
-
5-10 Drops of Your Choice Essential Oil
-

Give Your Laundry (& Machine) a Boost
Clothes start looking old and dingy over time with regular wear and wash. Boost an ordinary laundry load with some inexpensive Super Washing Soda to get whites white and colors bright. And don’t overlook your washing machine in the process. Say goodbye to mildew and unwanted odor with this washing machine cleaner.
Focus on Floors (at the End)
Think of your floors as if they are your home’s book cover. When they are clean, your whole home feels tidied up. Clean your floors as the final step in your overall cleaning process. Vacuum the carpet with a workhorse vacuum, mop hardwood or tile with a Swiffer, and for all of the in between, invest in a Roomba.
