Skiing’s cool and all, but remember warm-weather sports? Hiking season is upon us! As temps warm up and the snow melts, Utah’s trails beckon. Toss your snow gear in storage and bust out your hiking boots, it’s time to bag some peaks.
If you’re looking for some of the best views within a couple-hour drive of home, here are three must-do hikes to add to your summer bucket list.
Little Baldy via Dry Canyon Trail
Spring conditions are stellar on Little Baldy near Lindon, Utah. Beginning at Dry Canyon Trailhead, this 7.9-mile loop gains 2,687 feet of elevation. Beware of loose rock – this trail is rated hard for a reason. Appropriate footwear will keep you upright.
Pups are allowed on this dog-friendly trail. Along the way, enjoy lush greenery, valley views, and beautiful wildflowers.
Pro Tip: Go clockwise for a steep ascent and gradual descent. If you choose the alternative, hiking poles are a must.
Sunset Peak Trail
This 4.1-mile out-and-back hike near Alta, Utah, begins on Catherine Pass Trail and gains 1,358 feet of elevation. From mid-May through June, trail conditions are good. By July, they’re even better. Come for the wildflowers, wildlife, and 360 degrees of spectacular scenery, including several alpine lakes and neighboring peaks.
Parking closest to the trailhead is $8. To skip the fee, free parking is available on Albion Basin Road outside the Alta gate, but be prepared to tack on an extra 3 miles to your trek.
Pro Tip: Bring bug spray.
Mount Nebo
Steep but worth it, Mount Nebo is a 9.3-mile out-and-back hike near Payson, Utah, that ascends 3,589 feet. This is the tallest peak in the Wasatch Range, so dress in layers for maximum comfort – it gets windy up here.
What starts off in a grassy meadow, changes quickly a few miles in. The once-tree-lined trail becomes fully exposed and significantly steeper as you push toward a false summit, then finally the real deal.
Pro Tip: Hike North Peak on the way to Nebo to bag two summits in one trip.
