Every year on April 22, we commemorate the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. This year, we’re looking at ways we can make Earth Day a year-round thing. Let’s smother our Mother with love this Earth Day – and every day – with these four ways to honor our precious planet.
Ditch the Car
Try your best to go car-free. Go for a walk, run, or bike ride to get where you need to go. Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s good for your body, too! Absolutely need a car? Arrange to carpool with a friend, or take public transportation instead.
Grow Your Own Food
You don’t need to have a massive garden space to be able to grow your own produce. Try your hand at container gardening and you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy, and rewarding, it can be to grow your own food. Fresh basil, anyone?
Recycle. Upcycle. Donate.
It’s never too late to start recycling. Reach out to your local trash and recycling company to find out how you can do a better job at recycling old goods. In need of clothing, furniture, or sports gear? Always check local thrift shops and online shops like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace to find items that are in good, like-new condition. Breathe some new life into those items while saving them from the landfill. And when you’re looking to get rid of items yourself, consider selling online or donating to a local nonprofit. The less in the landfill, the better.
Invest in Reusable Storage Containers
It’s time to say goodbye to plastic baggies and hello to reusable storage containers. Stasher bags, a reusable nontoxic silicone storage bag, are great for storing snacks or other items in place of a zip-close bag. And for storing those food leftovers, invest in a set of glass Pyrex containers. They’re perfect for keeping food fresh for days.
