Looking for an off-the-radar adventure close to home? Check out these three offbeat destinations in and around Herriman.
The Up House
Believe it or not, the colorful house that takes flight in Disney/Pixar’s Up has a real-life doppelganger right here in Herriman. Built with Disney’s blessing, this 2,800-square-foot home is a replica of its animated counterpart in every way – inside and out. All that’s missing are the balloons!
Bingham Canyon Mine
OK, this might not sound like the most riveting of attractions at first mention, but the largest man-made excavation site on the planet is actually quite interesting. Here are a few fun facts about one of the top-performing mines in the world:
-
It operates 24/7, 365 days a year.
-
It has produced more than 20 tons of refined copper ore.
-
It’s provided the most wealth for the state of Utah of any company.
Visitors aren’t allowed at the moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but its Rio Tinto Kennecott Visitor Experience offers an up-close look at the colossal mine as well as the mining process. Stay tuned to the mine website for updates on when visitors are allowed to return.
Museum of Ancient Life
You’ll find this offbeat gem at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi. Home to “one of the world’s largest displays of mounted dinosaurs,” this museum is home to 60 complete dinosaur skeletons. It even features a working paleontology lab. For a fascinating dive into prehistoric times, the Museum of Ancient Life is worth a visit.
