Now is the perfect time of year to take a tour of the museums in the Herriman area. There are a lot more than you might realize, and each one of them is filled with beautiful exhibits and interesting things to learn about the local area, Utah, and the history of the American West.
Here are a few to check out.
Utah Museum of Fine Arts
This museum, located at the University of Utah, is home to over 20,000 original works of art from around the world spanning the spectrum of human history. Through permanent and temporary exhibits, as well as interactive stations and special events like lectures and panel discussions, their goal is to help the public connect with art in a meaningful way. Here, you’ll find collections of Chinese, American, African, Mesoamerican, and Pacific Island exhibits, as well as a permanent collection of modern and contemporary art, and temporary exhibits that feature peeks into art across history and cultures that will help you see the world in a whole new way.
Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts
Only relatively recently has the art world come to recognize the skill and beauty of folk art. In fact, it still struggles to gain fair recognition, as evidenced by the fact that this museum is the only one in the country that exclusively features a statewide collection of contemporary folk art. Here, you will find objects and art created by the various cultures that live within Utah’s borders, including Native Americans and the descendents of settlers from various cultural groups. Stroll through over a century of Utah’s folk art history as soon as you get a chance – admission is free!
Natural History Museum of Utah
This museum, at the University of Utah, first opened its doors in 1969 and has been a favorite place for locals and tourists to visit ever since. You can explore this area’s prehistoric history and learn about the dinosaurs that once roamed this land, or take in their collection of Navajo baskets and discover more about the history of the people who made them. From gems and minerals to Utah future-casting, there are endless adventures to explore here, stretching from the far distant past all the way into the unknown future.
