Did you know that modern day golf was invented in Scotland in 1457?
The first balls were made of feathers wrapped in leather, and players would tee off on mounds of sand.
If you would like to enjoy a round of golf, the best public courses around The Woodlands include:
Woodforest Golf Club
Designed by Steve Elkington, the Woodforest Golf Club meanders through the towering oaks of northwest Houston. It's known as a "player's course," and more than fifty thousand rounds are played here every year. Woodforest features 27 holes, and challenges golfers in the form of gently rolling hills, water hazards, and strategically placed sand traps.
The course is also home to one of the best driving ranges in town. It's closed on Thursday mornings for maintenance and comes complete with a short game area and a fully stocked pro shop.
Cypresswood Golf Club
Nestled along the confluence of the Spring and Cypress Creeks, Cypresswood features two unique golf experiences that aren't found anywhere else. The Houston Chronicle calls the club the area's "top rated daily fee course available to the public," and it features lush greens and rolling fairways.
On the Traditions course, players can have fun and get lost in the game, while Cypress is a shot makers course with many doglegs (a hole that is crooked like the hind leg of a dog).
Augusta Pines Golf Club
Augusta Pines is a semi-private club that's open to the public. Surrounded by towering pines and dogwoods, the course spans 7,041 yards, and it's where the water hazards keep everyone on their toes. The fairways are baby Bermuda grass, and the dramatic finishing holes are back-to-back island greens.
