An easy drive from our Spring, TX apartments is a fascinating destination featuring over 6,000 animals.
It's called the Houston Zoo, and more than two million people come to explore the exhibits every year.
KATHERINE G. McGOVERN TEXAS WETLANDS
Katherine G. McGovern Texas Wetlands is the zoo's newest exhibit. It brings together three native Texas species in a lush wetland habitat. One of the featured animals includes the whooping cranes. They're one of North America's largest birds and feature long necks and stout, straight bills. Adults are bright white with red accents on their heads. Whooping cranes move slowly and give a loud bugle call when startled.
WORTHAM WORLD OF PRIMATES
Step into the Wortham World of Primates to see some of the most intelligent creatures. Nestled in a natural setting, visitors can wander along a winding boardwalk to see rare and endangered species. Highlights include black howler monkeys, northern white-cheeked gibbons, and golden-headed lion tamarins.
McNAIR ELEPHANT HABITAT
Home to eight Asian elephants, this exhibit features enormous pools and a barn where visitors can watch as the animals enjoy their daily baths. In the wild, these elephants are mainly found in the scrub forests of Southeast Asia. They're listed as endangered due to poaching and loss of habitat.
CHEETAH WALK EXPERIENCE
To enhance your visit, enjoy the Cheetah Walk experience. It's offered on Wednesday mornings, and participants can join the keepers as they take the ambassador cheetah on a walk before the zoo opens. A portion of the proceeds helps animals in the wild.
