Taking a hike is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors while at the same time improving your balance and cardiovascular health.
The next time you're ready to go exploring, the best nearby trails include:
Hillview Trail
Found inside Eisenhower Park, the Hillview Trail encompasses nearly three miles and is popular among soldiers in training. The steep climb is aided in places by stairs, and once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with picturesque city views. The trail is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and also features cacti and an array of wildlife such as armadillos and whitetail deer.
Native Texas Prairie Trail
At one time, prairie covered miles of Texas acreage, and today it's one of the region's most endangered ecosystems. The Native Texas Prairie Trail is short at just a half mile, and it's home to meadowlarks, red-shouldered hawks, and scissor-tailed flycatchers, as well as deer that graze where buffalo once roamed.
Tower Loop Trail
The Tower Loop Trail calls Comanche Lookout Park home, and it takes hikers to the highest point in Bexar County. The park is named after the Native Americans believed to have used its hill as a lookout point when hunting. In the 1840s, the land was owned by the second president of the Republic of Texas, and the trail leads to the four-story medieval-style tower constructed by his sons. The path is open from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and it's rated as moderate. Visitors who want to learn more about the park's history should stop by the pavilion.
