Nestled on the south bank of the San Antonio River Walk is the oldest neighborhood in the city.
We're talking about La Villita, and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District.
It features architectural styles ranging from simple adobe structures to Texas vernacular limestone buildings, and markers share each building's history.
Highlights include:
Villita Stained Glass
Villita Stained Glass features the works of many Texas artists, some of whom call San Antonio home. It opened in 1982, and the owner is often found making glass beads (known as lampworking) in the back of the shop. The selection includes sun catchers, handcrafted lamps, and glass jewelry.
Capistrano Soap Company
At Capistrano, the products are handcrafted by a family of artisans with a soap-making heritage that dates back three generations. They strive to make the finest products and only use natural ingredients designed to be rich and soothing. Choices include olive oil soaps, bath salts, and coffee bar scrubs.
River Art Group
The River Art Group is one of the largest and finest artist groups in the United States. It's found in the Florian House and features more than 250 artists from San Antonio and the surrounding communities. They work in an array of mediums including oil, clay, and metal, and during the fall art show & competition, they contribute pieces for a silent auction which benefits a local charity.
Guadalajara Grill
The Guadalajara Grill has stood at the entrance of La Villita since 1991. It's known for offering friendly service and a colorful setting of ethnic culture and great music. The chefs prepare the dishes from scratch using fresh ingredients and recipes from Central and Southern Mexico. Choices include beef fajitas, Mayan enchiladas, and chile relleno.
