If you’re looking to get away to the coast, you couldn’t be in a better position to do so – Richmond is less than a day’s drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in Texas. Next time you want a weekend away, check out one of these locations.
Corpus Christi
This is the largest coastal city in the state, which means you’ll get all the beach action you can handle here. You’ll definitely want to check out Rockport Beach, Big Shell Beach, and Packery Channel Park. Mustang Island State Park features 5 miles of beach and offers recreational opportunities from hiking to camping. And while you’re there, you can learn all about its history, including the wild horses that used to live there that gave the island its name. You’ll definitely want to take a long weekend if you head there for your coastal getaway – there’s way too much to do for just a two-day stay!
Galveston
If you’re pressed for time, this is the perfect destination for your weekend mini-vacation – it’s only 1.5 hours away. Visitors love the old Southern charm of this island city, which is reflected in its architecture and culture. And though there is plenty of beach to enjoy, it’s also the home of many attractions that will keep you busy throughout your visit. Put Moody Gardens at the top of your must-see list, an educational nonprofit that feels more like an amusement park, featuring pyramids filled with ecological wonders from tropical landscapes to aquatic animals.
South Padre Island
Near the Mexican, border you’ll find this Texan jewel. It might be one of the furthest coastal destinations from Richmond, but it is totally worth the trip. In these warm waters, you’ll be able to observe dolphins all year-long. Check out the art scene and find all the sea turtles on the Sea Turtle Art Trail, or follow the Sandcastle Trail, where you’ll find 30 sand sculptures throughout the island. There’s also a vibrant entertainment and dining scene, which means you will never lack for things to do, no matter the time of year.
