When we think of travel, we often think of big, expensive trips to faraway places. Someday--we hope--we'll get there. But adventure and wild beauty are more accessible than you may think! Here are three incredible Texas State Parks within a day's drive from Odessa:
BALMORHEA STATE PARK
(1.45 hours southwest of Odessa)
This wetland was harnessed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s to become the "world's largest spring-fed swimming pool." The fresh water is deep enough in places for scuba diving and clear enough to see the tiny fish swimming alongside you! A desert oasis visited often by Former First Lady Laura Bush in her childhood, the park offers picnic tables, a playground, campsites, vintage lodging build by the CCC, and enormous shade trees. Bring a picnic lunch, birding binoculars, and plenty of sunscreen!
BIG SPRINGS STATE PARK
(1 hour northeast of Odessa)
A park with dramatic vistas, Big Springs is not to be missed! It's one of the few vantage points in West Texas where you can see for hundreds of miles! Take a peaceful nature walk around the scenic loop. Then get some perspective as you overlook the town of Big Spring and beyond. Perfect for beginning trail walkers, joggers, bird-watchers, and nature lovers!
SAN ANGELO STATE PARK
(2 hours southeast of Odessa)
Come for the wildlife (bison, hawks, and Longhorns, oh my!) and stay for the stargazing and sunrises! This nearly 8,000-acre park has it all: camping, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding! Explore the 50 miles of trail or paddle out onto the O.C. Fisher Reservoir or the Concho River.
