CELEBRATE THE DRAGONFLIES OF SIBLEY NATURE CENTER

|

With Midland's Sibley Nature Center right around the corner, you'll soon have a chance to learn about and view some beautiful dragonflies that call Texas home during the annual dragonfly celebration in August. So if you're looking for a new outdoor experience, you'll want to make the quick 10-minute drive from your luxurious Anatole on Briarwood apartment home to the nature center so you can catch a glimpse of these winged creatures!

6TH ANNUAL DRAGONFLY CELEBRATION

The Sibley Nature Center is hosting the dragonfly celebration on August 10th, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are several scheduled activities to participate in, so you can choose what fits your interests and schedule.

FREE ACTIVITIES

From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., you can enjoy a free tour of the Sibley Pond which is host to a large number of dragonflies and damselflies (both of which are called odonates). The Sibley Nature Center Pond and Playa "has a particularly diverse population of odonates including one that has only been observed in one other location in Texas." A shuttle is available to the pond. At 7 p.m., Dr. Nancy McIntyre, a professor of biology at Texas Tech University, will provide a free presentation to the public that gives insight and awareness about the diversity of dragonflies and damselflies found in the Texas playas. Her discussion will take place in the Sibley Auditorium.

TICKETED EVENT SUPPORTING THE PRESERVATION OF THE POND

From 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., you can attend the Citizen Science Workshop with a $25 ticket. During the workshop, you will learn about the dragonflies and damselflies found at the pond. You will also find out how to identify, net, handle, photograph, and share scientific data on these insects. You can purchase your ticket through the Sibley Center website, and the fee covers a catered lunch, hat, an 8 x 10 photo of one of the dragonflies you capture on camera, and research material. This workshop is a great way to support the Sibley Nature Center Pond and Playa, which is currently being restored with native plants and trees to improve and preserve the health of this special ecosystem.

After a fun-filled day learning about these unique dragonflies and their habitat, return to the comfort of your beautifully-appointed Anatole on Briarwood home. Contact us today to learn about the wonderful amenities our community has to offer!
