Parks, bars, books, pizza, and the perfect Texan urban playground: These are just some of the things you’ll find in downtown Midland. Here are a few tips for making the most of your next visit.
Go Hunting for Murals
Did you know that there are several murals decorating the downtown area, creating what you might call a free, outdoor gallery for everyone to enjoy? The Oil Rigs Mural can be found on the corner of Illinois and Big Spring and is best viewed after 5 PM, when the parking lot clears. Take a stroll through the alleyway between Bourbon Street Bar and Wall Street Lofts and you’ll find five beautiful murals decorating the walls. Or head over to the downtown library to see the Imagination Mural that covers the south and east sides of the exterior walls.
Relax in Centennial Park
Head over to this park’s famous Great Lawn and enjoy a picnic or simply relax and do a little people watching as you disconnect from the distractions of everyday life. Bring game pieces and take advantage of the park’s granite game boards. Chess? Checkers? Bring a friend or invite a passerby to join you. Or simply take a long stroll around the grounds and take in the beautiful urban cityscape surrounding the park.
Indulge at the Midland Micro Market
This collection of 10 shops is filled with fun indulgences. You’ll find mochas and lattes at Cpl. Rays Coffee, and jumbo milkshakes at Popville where you can choose from 20 different flavors. And for a real treat, head over to Lo.St. Books for an afternoon treat. Sure, it sounds like a bookstore – and it is – but it’s also a wine bar (or wine “experience,” as they like to call it) and a gourmet café. You can join their wine club, take advantage of their meet-the-author events, or simply curl up with a good book and glass of wine on their cozy couches, and take your time to find just the book you’re looking for.
End the Day with Pizza
You’ll find some of the best pizza in the city right in downtown Midland. Head over to Pi Social for authentic Neapolitan pizzas topped with some of the best ingredients you’ve ever tasted, from fig jam to wagyu beef.
