If you love sports, you’ll be itching to head to the theater this year to see all the latest sports movies coming out in 2022. Here are a few to put on your must-see list.
Next Goal Wins
This comedy-drama follows the story of Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen and his leadership of the American Samoa National Football Team. This team was considered the weakest in the entire world, leading into the qualifications for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Michael Fassbender plays Rongen, with an all-star cast including Elisabeth Moss and Will Arnett. The movie’s release date hasn’t been announced yet, but it will hit theaters at some point late in 2022.
Home Team
This movie, which came out on Netflix in January, tells the story of New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, who was suspended from his job for a year in 2012 due to his alleged involvement in the “Bountygate” scandal. During this time, Payton used his time off to coach his son’s middle school football team, the Liberty Christian Warriors. This movie is a dramatization of those events. What is remarkable about this story is that it indeed portrays a fairly true account of what happened during this period of time in Payton’s life – the story of the NFL coach who takes over coaching his son’s middle school team is much stranger than fiction.
Liger
This is an Indian sports action film set for release on August 25. It stars Vijay Deverakonda and Ananya Panday. This film also marks Mike Tyson’s debut as an actor, which is reason enough for many sports fans to tune in. Deverakonda plays a kickboxer and martial artist who puts all of his energy into his training, transforming both his body and his life.
Maidaan
Another Indian film, Maidaan is a biographical story of India’s vibrant “golden age” of football (and by that, we mean soccer). It follows coach Syed Abdul Rahim, played by actor Ajay Devgn, from 1952 to 1962. The film is set for release on June 3.
