Enjoy an Amazing Day at the Houston Audubon Raptor and Education Center
We obviously have a fondness for birds here at Falcon Landing! For a fun-filled day learning about nature's feathery creatures, head to the Houston Audubon Raptor and Education Center at Sims Bayou. It boasts aviaries, a log cabin, and scenic seasonal trails that offer an opportunity to explore the outdoors in a dense urban setting. Here is some of what you can discover near our apartments in Katy:
Barred Owl
Large and stocky, barred owls are known for their "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?" calls. The sound carries through the center and is easy to imitate. You'll also recognize the barred owl by his mottled white and brown feathers and brown eyes so dark that they almost appear black.
Purple Martin
During your visit, you'll also meet Emilio. He's a purple martin with a large, broad chest, slightly crooked bill, and iridescent blue-purple feathers. In the wild, purple martins feed in mid-air and quickly fly with a mix of flapping and guiding.
Raptor Center Tours
For a unique look at the center, enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour. You'll learn about the raptors, conservation, and what it takes to run a raptor center. The fun takes place before the center opens. Advanced registration is required.
Raptor Photography Shoots
Whether you're a professional photographer or capture images from your smartphone, don't miss the raptor photography shoots. In an intimate setting, you can get up close to owls, falcons, hawks, and other majestic birds to create stunning works of art. The shoots usually take place between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
