There’s a lot of seasonal fun to be had in Murfreesboro in October. Here are a few events that you absolutely won’t want to miss.

Battle of the Bands

This particular battle of the bands goes back to the Civil War, on the night of Dec. 30, 1862. After a day of battle, the military bands of the Union and Confederate armies began playing their nightly music. At some point, one of the bands played Home Sweet Home, at which time, the other band stopped playing, then joined in the refrain, uniting all the soldiers on both sides in a musical tribute to home. This event on Oct. 16 will bring that moment to life, right there on the Stones River National Battlefield, playing songs that haven’t been heard there in 150 years. It’s an all day event (the public is welcome to observe the morning rehearsals), and the actual concert runs from 4 to 6 PM.

Great Pumpkin Festival

Head over to the Discovery Center on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 4 to 7 PM for this fun, Halloween-themed event. There will be a costume contest, activities, crafts, critter encounters, and a “not-so-haunted walk-through experience.” This is a great low-key way to celebrate the holiday in an outdoor, family-friendly space.

Black Murfreesboro Market

Support local Black-owned businesses at the Black Murfreesboro Market on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Cannonsburgh Village. Here, you’ll find bath and body products, jewelry, clothing, cosmetics, home goods, and more. You’ll also want to grab a bite to eat with vendors that serve everything from barbecue to Caribbean fare.

Tennessee STEAM Festival

This unique educational festival began in 2017, bringing the entire community together in order to inspire the youth of Murfreesboro. This year, it runs from Oct. 15 through 24 and creates opportunities for families and youth to connect with professionals in the science, technology, engineering, art, and math fields. Join in the fun and help the young people of Murfreesboro find their way as they prepare for the next steps in their education.

Boro Tattoo Fest

Check out the first tattoo convention in Murfreesboro! You’ll have access to over 90 tattoo artists during this three-day event from Friday, Oct. 22 through Sunday, Oct. 24 at the MID-TN Expo Center.
