NEW MEXICO'S 4 BEST DESTINATIONS FOR ART LOVERS (BESIDES SANTA FE)

|

Everyone knows that Santa Fe is the heart of New Mexico’s art world. But there’s actually so much for art lovers to take in all around the state.

If you love art, want to explore more of the artistic culture of the Land of Enchantment, and perhaps even want to add to your art collection, check out some of these destinations.

Zuni Pueblo

The Zuni Pueblo is the largest pueblo in the state, and at least 80% of its people make their living in the arts. The Zuni are well-known for their masterful silver and bead work, fetish carvings, traditional wood statues featuring kachina dancers, and pottery. They host many festivals and expos for those who are interested in their art and have organized the ARTZ Cooperative to make their work more accessible to visitors.

Las Cruces

This city’s art fair is about to celebrate its 11th year on the weekend of March 5. They have a stunning collection of art from a variety of Southwestern artists and craftspeople. You’ll find mixed media, silverwork, sculpture, traditional Native American art, pottery, jewelry and more. Tickets are $10, which covers the entire two-day event and they can be purchased soon via their website, or you can pick one up at the door.

Silver City

We’ll bet you didn’t know that this little city in the southwestern part of the state has a vibrant arts and culture scene. Some art lovers go there just to admire the more than 50 murals that are featured around town. There are several galleries in the historic downtown region and Silver City has even received the honor of being named one of the “100 Best Art Towns in America.” This is a particularly great destination for fiber art lovers, thanks to Silver City’s Southwest Women’s Fiber Arts Collective which hosts several events and markets throughout the year showcasing the best in knitting, spinning, weaving, and quilting.

Taos

No doubt, you’re not surprised to see this one included. It’s usually at the top of every art lover’s list of must-visit destinations. This city has a rich cultural heritage of Pueblo and Spanish influences, and is known for its abundance of galleries and rich artists’ community.
