Stretching 47 acres, the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum "brings to life the 4,000-year history of farming and ranching in New Mexico." It's a top attraction and draws visitors from around the world with demonstrations, oral histories, and interactive exhibits. Here is some of what you can enjoy at this farm museum near our Las Cruces apartments.
New Mexico Colonial Home
Step back in time in New Mexico Colonial Home. Featuring a replica of an 1815 home, it's made of wood and adobe plaster for an authentic look. It boasts a living room and courtyard and invites visitors to come in and explore.
Saddle Makers of the Southwest
Found inside the museum's horse and cattle barn, Saddle Makers of the Southwest highlights the unique art of saddle making. The makers have played an important role in the state's ranching history. A saddle was one of the most expensive purchases that cowboys made. They needed something durable, whether roping cattle, out on cattle drives, or showing off their skills at a rodeo. The exhibit features four people whose saddles represent some of the most well-known Southwestern saddle makers.
Her Land: Women in Agriculture
Her Land: Women in Agriculture showcases women who have made a difference in New Mexico agriculture. It currently tells the story of Sophia Moreno of La Union. She grew up on her family's farm, where she helped raise livestock. Sophia also participated in 4-H, competing in barrel racing, horse shows, and other events. Her goal is to become a veterinarian. The exhibit features a new woman approximately every six months.
