Pick Up Your Next Page Turner at These Local Bookstores

Las Cruces is a great town for shopping. It is particularly blessed with a range of bookstores, and they’re all just minutes away from our community, making it easier than ever to swing by and pick up your next page turner. Check out these bookstores near our Las Cruces, New Mexico apartments.

COAS Bookstore

This giant bookstore near the Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science is the largest independent bookstore in New Mexico. COAS carries over half a million titles in books alone. They also sell movies on DVD, music on CD and even vinyl, and, of course, audio books. They even handle out-of-print books. You can trade in your books here for store credit.

Despite its massive size, this bookstore is family run and offers incredible service with knowledgeable staff members. The founder, Pat Beckett, ran a small archeological publishing company, then combined it with a local paperback exchange. COAS stands for the Center for Anthropological Studies and coa means digging stick in Nahuatl. Beckett's children run the bookstore to this day. They have a calendar for events such as book signings.

New Mexico State University Bookstore

As a college bookstore, much of the shelf space is devoted to school merchandise, but there is much more on offer here than Aggie hats and sweatshirts. In addition to the textbooks, this bookstore sells novels across all genres for casual reading, health and beauty supplies, board games, and dorm/home decor.

Perhaps the best feature of this bookstore is its in-store cafe. You can order your coffee drink of choice, find a nice chair, and settle in to peruse their selection of books. It is a great place to meet your friends for a hot drink as well.

Bowlin's Mesilla Bookstore

This cute little bookstore is right on the plaza, housed in the circa 1856 mercantile building. Because of its popular location, it sells cards and gifts for tourists, but its smaller selection of books on sale is well curated and worth checking out. They have some titles by local authors and other interesting books of regional interest.
