If you’re looking for a great way to spend a weekend afternoon, check out some of these incredible museums in the Las Cruces area. Get out and about, have some fun, and learn something new.
Museum of Art
This museum showcases rotating exhibits of contemporary art. You’ll also find art workshops, and artist talks regularly scheduled through their hosted events. They even have an extensive variety of studio classes for those who want to work on their craft and get expert guidance. This museum isn’t just there to showcase art, but to help all local artists (or artists-in-training) develop their skill set.
Museum of Nature & Science
Here, you’ll find an environment in which interactive learning and curiosity about the world is encouraged. The Museum of Nature & Science focuses on three major topics: Permian Trackways, Light and Space, and Desert Life. In other words, it’s all about what’s below, around, and above us, right here in New Mexico. There are exhibits that will give you a new perspective on the universe, a better understanding of the desert ecosystem in which we live, and even a peek into ancient history thanks to their collection of fossils.
Branigan Cultural Center
New Mexico is home to a rich, diverse, and complex cultural history, with its blend of indigenous, Mexican, Spanish and other European cultures. Each culture has its own art, traditions, and cuisine, and all of them have blended in a beautiful tapestry that makes The Land of Enchantment so unique. Learn about these cultures at this cultural center, admire their art, and discover all the many contributions each one has made to New Mexico and to the nation, as a whole. All of this you’ll find housed in a structure rich with its own cultural history – a 1935 Pueblo Revival-style building that was once the very first library in Las Cruces.
Railroad Museum
This museum is a must-see for all the railroad aficionados out there. It’s housed in the historic Santa Fe Railroad Depot, and there, you’ll learn all about the impact of the railroad on this region of the country. You’ll also find gallery talks, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, adult and kids programs (virtual and in-person), and special events there, so make sure you keep an eye on their calendar!
