For a day of outdoor fun, head to Carvers Creek State Park. It features Long Valley Farm, which was once the winter retreat of James Stillman Rockefeller, and is where visitors enjoy everything from recreational activities to cultural history. Here is some of what the park has to offer near our Raeford apartments:
Rockefeller House
Overlooking the scenic millpond, the Rockefeller House was used by James Stillman Rockefeller during the winter months. Today, it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll find the home after a short walk along the Rockefeller Trail.
Fishing
Cast a line in the millpond. It has been a part of Long Valley Farm since the 1850s, and is a fabulous fishing destination. A North Carolina Inland Fishing license is required to fish in the park.
Cypress Point Loop Trail
Lace up your hiking boots along the Cypress Point Loop Trail. Along the way, you will spot historic structures like the grist mill. It played a key role in utilizing waterpower in the 1900s. Cypress Point is a .75-mile loop trail and was once a road during the peak of the farm.
Bird Watching
The park's longleaf pines are home to federally endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers. Despite their name, these birds are mainly black-and-white. Males are identified by the tiny red steak at the upper border of their cheeks. Red-cockaded woodpeckers are also known for being vocal. They make a raspy "sklit" sound when disturbed and a "churt" call when flying into a roosting and nesting area. At the park, the trees marked with white bands feature active woodpecker holes. Other birds you may see include Savannah sparrows, blue grosbeaks, and pine warblers.
