Not far from our Fayetteville apartments is a fascinating destination covering more than 400 years of history. We are talking about the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, and it brings the "region's history to life through exhibits, living-history programs, and demonstrations." Here is some of what you can discover during your visit:
1897 Poe House
Constructed in 1897, the Poe House was originally built for the E.A. Poe family. E.A. Poe was a local businessman who owned the Poe Brick Company. Today, the home is where you can learn about life in the early twentieth century. Tour topics include African American history, children's roles, and social changes in southern North Carolina. The guided tours are offered at select times, Tuesday through Sunday. The suggested donation is two dollars for adults and one dollar for children under twelve.
Heroes Homecoming: On the Homefront
A special exhibit, Heroes Homecoming: On the Homefront, is on view from November 1 through November 30, 2022. It highlights the bravery, honor, courage, and sacrifice of those who have served. The display features thematic panels, and you'll also learn about how families support the military by focusing their energy at home. After enjoying Heroes Homecoming, explore permanent gallery exhibits such as Textiles and Early Exploration and Settlement.
Arsenal Park
The arsenal was constructed between 1838 and 1856. The Confederacy eventually gained control, and used it to make ammunition, rifles, and gun carriages before the arsenal was destroyed by Union troops in 1865. The site is now home to extant ruins with explanation signage and two Civil War Trail markers.
