We’re well into the New Year, which means one thing: you should be rocking those resolutions. Oh wait, you’re struggling like the rest of us? Ok, good to know. We all hit that resolution slump sometime. Read on for three tips to help you keep at those resolutions a bit longer.
Understand Why You Made The Resolution
It can be easy for us all to say, “I want to lose 15 pounds.” But, if you don’t dig deep into the why, that can seem like a big goal to try to keep. Why are you sticking to old habits, when you know you need to change? Unhealthy behaviors often have immediate payoffs that are pleasurable, like eating that tub full of ice cream at night. So it’s hard to imagine why you shouldn’t keep doing something that makes you feel better. When you get your priorities in order, weigh the pros and the cons, you’ll experience lasting success in making your resolution stick.
Treat Yourself for Small Accomplishments
Resolutions can often feel daunting, especially if broad goals are set that feel hard to achieve. Treat yourself along the way for small victories. Are you wanting to be more punctual, and have made it on time to every commitment today? Tell all your friends so they can cheer you on. Having that personal motivation from yourself (or from your people) gets you in the mood to keep going.
Small Habits Eventually Become Big Ones
Keeping your resolutions at top-of-mind daily will not only help them stick, but will help you succeed in the long run. Every morning, make it a point to add into your routine a little thought or mediation about your resolution. Make it a point to work towards your goal everyday. Trying to quit a bad habit? Replace it with a healthy alternative (smoothie instead of milkshake, anyone?). Studies show it takes an average of 66 days to get into the habit of doing something, so go ahead and challenge yourself. Create those mini habits that will ultimately lead you where you want to be.
It’s easy to stray from your New Year’s resolutions – but it’s not too late to achieve your goals. Use these three tips to help you keep at them. For more fun tips and tricks, check out The Palmer’s blog.
