North Carolina is filled with opportunities for those who love to be on the water. Surrounded by an abundance of lakes, rivers, and other waterways, you’ll have lots of places to choose from when you’re heading out for a paddle. Here are some of our favorites to get you started!
Mountain Island Lake
Though it’s a relatively small lake, this natural wonder is an important part of local life. Forming part of the Catawba River Blueway, Mountain Island Lake provides drinking water for nearly one million residents. Due to its protected location, it’s one of the most undeveloped, natural places for paddling, making it a favorite spot for those who want to get away from city life for an afternoon.
Anne Springs Close Greenway
You won’t want to miss exploring the stunning 2,100 acres at Anne Springs Close Greenway, located less than 15 minutes away from The Palmer and just over the South Carolina border. They offer kayak and paddleboard rentals (be sure to call ahead to reserve yours) for a leisurely day on the water.
Ramsey Creek Park
Located on the shore of Lake Norman, Ramsey Creek Park is widely known by locals as the most accessible kayak launch in the area. While you’re there, you can also enjoy the beach, picnic area, volleyball courts, fishing pier, and horseshoe pit – making this the perfect place to take a break from your everyday life.
Crowders Mountain State Park
Crowders Mountain State Park features paddle trails through its waterways, and you can rent kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. This is one of the most beautiful, peaceful areas in the state, a place where you can take in the scenery and not have to worry about a single thing on your to-do list.
U.S. National Whitewater Center
If you love whitewater, we have the place for you. Just minutes away from home, you can enjoy the thrill of rough water at the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Book some time to hop on a kayak or canoe and get ready for some fun! While you’re there, be sure to enjoy their zipline opportunities, rope course, yoga, and climbing, too.
